The Golf Drive Gang, 1974

The Golf Drive Gang, 1974
My son, Nate, is in the middle and they're all five years old, identical hair, identical Big Wheels. His buddies lived on the same street and played all day, everywhere, every day. Their mothers rarely checked on them unless lunch and dinner were ready. They came in filthy dirty, with ripped jeans, bloody knees, and busted-out shoes. They ate like trenchermen with no whining about what was on the plate.

Soquel, California. This would have been taken with a Kodak Instamatic camera and a shaky hand. I've tried to sharpen it a little with a Photomania "paint" effect.

YOU ARE SO RIGHT . THE LAST WHO KNEW REAL FREEDOM.

ME ALSO AN EXAMPLE ...... AT 10 I WAS ALLOWED TO GO ON THE TRAIN UP TO CENTRAL LONDON ON A SATURDAY MORNING TO THE CLASSICAL CONCERTS AT THE ROYAL FESTIVAL HALL. CONCERTS TO INTRODUCE YOUNG KIDS TO BEAUTIFUL MUSIC. . MY PARENTS MDE SURE I KNEW THE TRAINS AND THE WAY.. AND ALL POLICEMEN WERE MY FRIENDS WHO I COULD TRUST TO ASK IF I NEEDED HELP.

THAT BECAME A THING OF THE PAST. SAD REFLECTION OF THE WORLD AS IT BECAME LESS SAFE.

Lovely memory of those times where children could live and play in a freer and simpler way in the courtyards or even in the quieter streets without bothering about how much they might dirt their jeans or even wound their knees !:-)

I myself , in my childhood, enjoyed all this!
Ciao Diane !!

We were lucky, weren't we? I know I grew up a much more independent child than my grandchildren are. Grazie mille, my friend Bea!

Here's to bruised knees and torn jeans! ;-b

Love the Gang ! Think at some point if you had a male child [ in that time period ] -- he had a haircut like that !
