➽ Die Stadtmetzg im Lechviertel von Augsburg ist ein historischer Bau im Stil der Spätrenaissance und wurde zwischen 1606 und 1609 vom Stadtbaumeister Elias Holl erbaut.
Schon bei den Planungen war Elias Holl mit einiger Raffinesse vorgegangen und aus dem prächtigen vierstöckigen Gebäude mit dem schmalen Giebel sollte der bis dahin modernste Bau der Fleischerzunft werden: so wurde der Vordere Lech, einer der Lechkanäle, direkt offen unter das Schlachthaus geleitet, was einerseits eine ausreichende Kühlung der Fleischwaren ermöglichte, andererseits den Metzgern erlaubte, Abfälle von der Schlachtbank direkt in den Kanal zu entsorgen.
Im Zuge der Industrialisierung nahm die Bedeutung der Stadtmetzg als städtische Zentralschlachterei immer weiter ab. Mit der Eröffnung eines modernen Schlachthofes vor den Toren der Stadt im Jahr 1900 war der weitere Betrieb der Metzg unnötig geworden und schloß 1930 endgültig die Tore. ➽ The Stadtmetzg (Historic City Butcher) in Lech district of Augsburg is a historic building in the style of the late Renaissance and was built in 1606-1609 by city architect Elias Holl.
Already while the planning Elias Holl acted with some refinement and the magnificent four-storey building with narrow gable should be one of the hitherto most modern buildings of the butchers' guild: the "Vodere Lech", one of the Lech channels, was passed therethrough directly and open under the slaughterhouse, which on the one hand allowed sufficient cooling of the meat but also enabled the butchers to dispose the waste from the slaughter directly into the channel.
In the course of industrialization, the importance of Stadtmetzg as urban central slaughterhouse continuously declines. With the opening of a modern slaughterhouse on the outskirts of the city in 1900, the continued operation of the "Metzg" had become unnecessary and it closed finally the gates in 1930.
