Ennerdale Water

This months Ipernity SPC competition was 'fences', would you believe, and so here is one of my Lake District shots of 2014 from the beautiful, lesser know 'lake' of Ennerdale Water. (it came 6th, and so you can see the quality of these competitions.) More info on the Ipernity SPC: www.ipernity.com/group/2249054/discuss/190840
Ennerdale Water is the most westerly lake in the Lake District National Park in Cumbria, England. It is a glacial lake, with a maximum depth of 150 feet, and is ½ mile to a mile wide and 2½ miles long. -Wikipedia

A Strid Wood Idyll

A rather artistic view of the splendid River Wharfe in the magnificent Strid Wood, of Bolton Abbey near Skipton, Yorkshire Dales.

Misty day on the canal

As autumn turns to winter we see here the classic results of cold ground temperatures alongside warmer air. Who cannot resist a run around with one's camera to try and capture such scenes as this. Taken on the Huddersfield canal at my local village of Greenfield in what promised to be the start of a wondrous morning of light and mist for me.
We have all been there!

Well maybe not quite like this and certainly not on this wonderful beach at Rossbeigh in County Kerry.
As to other views that this stranger was taking, you will have to visit later :)

As an old canal barge awaits some attention these geese go sailing by. I see them coming before they are framed by this natural red reflection box but just a few more moments and.....got em!

Memories of Emerald Lake
| |
|
|
|
Reminded of my travels here in the Canadian Rockies just the other night, I was tempted to release another shot of this magnificent lake. It is seated high in the YoHo national Park and believe me, our two hour stay besides this lake was all too short. The wooden buildings provides some accommodation and food for those lucky enough to stay longer.
Enjoy large.

River Clunie fence
| |
|
|
|
We have a choice of fences here on this small river that joins the mighty River Dee only metres from here. As a backdrop we have the famous Braemar Castle. In case you are wondering why a fence should be laid across a river, its possible purpose is to catch floating debris but more likely to foil deer from swimming into the next area.
I wish you all, a great weekend, Herb

Loch Kinord

|
|

A tranquil Loch here, providing a great walk. It is approximately 1 mile in length and was formed from a glacial kettle hole. Of course our round walk was more like 3-4 miles. We saw fish a-jumping as well as grazing deer here.

Sizergh Castle
| |
|
|
|
Our walk today brings us to this elegant castle and gardens. A quick rush around the pond here for a photo completes our day out.
The Strickland family has lived at Sizergh for more than 750 years, and it remains their home today. Set in large, beautifully landscaped gardens and based on an impressive 14th Century solar tower, Sizergh was extended in Tudor times. The romantic fortified mansion contains some of the finest Elizabethan carved overmantels in the country, as well as a collection of good English and French furniture and family portraits.

For some reason, I am still pleasantly surprised when I see these splendid creatures outside Scotland. This girl was cooling her feet (as is quite usual for Highland cattle) in this small lake just off the coast at South Milton Sands here in Devon.

A fine scene on the’ Trent and Mersey Canal’ in Staffordshire. The swan just about keeping in the frame as I snapped it on this rare October sunny day. The bridge here is a road bridge but nearby are also numerous railway bridges for the West Coast Main Line railway too.
I wish you all, a great weekend, Herb

Autumn Idyll
| |
|
|
|
As Autumn starts here, I look back here on one of my best Autumn days out from last year. Yesterday, I witnessed my first real look at the fresh Autumn gold colours and so have hopes of adding to my Autumn collection soon.
This taken from 'Strid Wood' in the Yorkshire Dales near Skiption.

Gibson Mill
| |
|
|
|
This Autumn I have had a rare chance to revisit a favourite place: Hardcastle Crags near Hebden Bridge. In its heart sits this mill and pond. The mill, now a small cafe, even has seats where I am here to picnic whilst admiring this wonderful view.
This fine old mill now owned by The National Trust lies in a very picturesque valley. The Gibson Mill was built around 1800. It was one of the first generation mills of the Industrial Revolution. The Mill was driven by a water wheel inside and produced cotton cloth up until 1890. In 1833, 21 workers were employed in the building, each working an average 72 hours per week

I am here at my local Alexandra park again collecting yet more Autumn scenes. Taken just before the best of this year’s Autumn golds but on a beautiful clear dry day. Notice on the lawns across, the now very local Canadian Geese that have taken up residence here. – Sorry for the slightly out-of-focus fence, I was obviously too taken up with the landscape and light.
I wish you all, a great weekend, Herb
Autumn harmony

Man and nature come together here at Hardcastle Crags to give us a bit of piece and harmony. It was not always so. The buildings are part of the Gibson Mill which provided work for some locals many years ago.

Briksdalsbreen Glacier remembered
| |
|
|
|
A look at Briksdalsbreen Glacier and its lake in Norway, taken in Aug 2005. We travelled to this from Olden, on Nordfjord and was astounded by the beauty of it. See PiP
Unfortunately, we see it here before its impending death! - I was astonished to see yesterday, that this view has almost disappeared in the 14 years since we were here, due presumably to global warming. I did in fact manage to get underneath the ice here too. Only the very top is now visible as ice but the modern visitor have a few splendid waterfalls from the melting top of this in Summer.
See the decline of the glacier here .
Another from my Panoramio collection.

Share here some of the delights of this Yorkshire canal system near Sowerby Bridge. We are just approaching the Copley Viaduct that runs overhead here.
