A trio of beautiful pictures Herb. The second PiP is a very unusual shot. We had a regular woodpecker visit here but not for a while now. I keep looking out for it, camera always handy!

Thanks Rosa. Yes, he was a constant companion every day for a week whilst we were here. Mostly only a couple of feet from the big French Windows but alas, taking from inside was always very much against the light. I have some nice ones all the same and may post them in due course. You will know how thrilling it s to see one of these close to.

Nice to see you about Dave. We have a regular visit to our own garden too but this chappie was hanging on the feeder only a couple of feet away from the large French Windows we had so many photos taken (yet to post). Glad you enjoyed these here.

Haha, yes nature can be very cute Annalia. I was lucky getting this I think. We saw a lot of it as it was always feeding on the feeder only cm's from our big windows.

Wow! Such a lovely series Herb...............what a wonderful sight to see every day. All three shots are beautifully captured. What great memories.

Did you have fat-cakes on the feeder? I only ask because the woody that visits our feeder eats from the fat-cake and then rubs the excess from his beak onto the fence post. I thought this one might be doing the same :-)

Thanks for this Keith. Great that you enjoyed the three. To answer your question. No there was no fat balls there but when the woodpecker comes to our own garden feeder we usually have fat balls that it soon devourers. As you say, that would explain the preening action.
