I mosaici più celebri, collocati nelle due pareti sottostanti e in posizione speculare, rappresentano il corteo dell’Imperatore Giustiniano e della moglie, l’imperatrice Teodora che recano in offerta la patena con le ostie e il calice con il vino dirigendosi verso il Cristo Cosmocratore del catino absidale. Si tratta quindi di un omaggio alla divinità da cui trae origine il loro potere sulla terra. Infatti, nonostante una certa verosimiglianza dei tratti somatici (si ritiene che i loro volti siano stati copiati da ritratti spediti da Costantinopoli), Giustiniano e Teodora sono raffigurati frontalmente e con il capo circondato dall’aureola e si presentano a loro volta come immagini simboliche e astratte.

Nel pannello con Giustiniano, vediamo una serie di figure maschili che poggiano i piedi su un prato o, più probabilmente, su un tappeto di colore verde. L’imperatore, al centro, indossa una tunica bianca con guarnizioni dorate e una clamide (il mantello imperiale) color porpora, chiusa sulla spalla destra da una fibula a disco in pietre preziose e perle, con tre pendenti. È coronato da un diadema in oro, perle e gemme, con due pendenti per parte.
Alla sua sinistra riconosciamo il vescovo Massimiano, grazie dall’epigrafe scritta sul suo capo. L’uomo con la barba, alla destra di Giustiniano, è probabilmente Belisario, che aveva conquistato l’Italia per conto del sovrano.

The most famous mosaics, placed in the two walls below and in a mirror-like position, represent the procession of Emperor Justinian and his wife, Empress Theodora, who are offering the paten with the hosts and the chalice with the wine heading towards Christ the Cosmocrator in the apse basin. It is therefore a homage to the divinity from which their power on earth derives. In fact, despite a certain verisimilitude of their somatic features (it is believed that their faces were copied from portraits sent from Constantinople), Justinian and Theodora are depicted frontally and with their heads surrounded by a halo and are in turn presented as symbolic and abstract images.

In the panel with Justinian, we see a series of male figures resting their feet on a lawn or, more probably, on a green carpet. The emperor, in the centre, wears a white tunic with golden trimmings and a purple clamide (the imperial cloak), closed on the right shoulder by a disc-shaped fibula made of precious stones and pearls, with three pendants. It is crowned with a gold diadem, pearls and gems, with two pendants on each side.
On his left we recognise Bishop Massimiano, thanks to the epigraph written on his head. The man with the beard, to the right of Justinian, is probably Belisarius, who had conquered Italy on behalf of the sovereign.
