This is a male. I posted a photo of a female a few days ago. (The morning was very dark, so these photos aren't so sharp.)

Wonderful! I have never seen a purple finch, only house finches.

Apparently, I have seen both species. I had mis-identified this as a purple finch, but Betty Jo has corrected me. ;-/
