The Sunday Challenge this week is: Use a photograph to convey what you are thankful for.

There are so many things to be thankful for, but without my varifocal glasses and my (large) hearing aids I wouldn't be able to hear music or birdsong, or read, or see things clearly, or appreciate everything around me. So, although this photo is really mundane, I am so very thankful for these items which I use every single day, and without which I would be living in a totally silent and somewhat blurred world.

I won't be online until Sunday evening, but I'm really looking forward to seeing what you are all thankful for.

You don't know what you've got til it's gone - Joni Mitchell

You have the most precious things in hearing aids & glasses, I know because I was born deaf myself & have been wearing aids since I was a child......I have a rare deafness & when they started changing to digital aids that weren't compatible to me, I had to hope my analogue would hold out, it was a very depressing thought, but now they have found one that's perfect for me & I like you is very thankful indeed.
I have empathy of your image which it is certainly not mundane & understanding of your thankfulness Amelia, well done on this challenged !!!!
You made me realized now that the most thankful thing to have & I never gave it a thought, maybe because it's a way of life that is taken for granted till maybe it's not there almost ..... sorry to go on !!!

I remember the day I became deaf as if it was yesterday, Marj, it was just over 7 years ago, and I was totally mortified, but had to pull myself together. I cannot imagine being deaf from birth. When we lived in Norway (that was where we were the day I became deaf), a lovely young woman, who was born deaf as you were, came round to our apartment several times to help me adjust, and brought various aids with her. She was just so positive, and really helped me at that time. We take so much for granted don't we?

Sorry that you suddenly lost your hearing.... what was the cause of that, if you don't mind me asking ....
I think people find it hard to adjust to losing their hearing, with me I never knew any different, so it was accepted as a way of life.
Eyes to me are more precious, a life without seeing the world would be devastating more so than hearing loss.
It was lovely to hear that you had a lot of support & that you are copping well now I hope !! .....Regards Marj

It was an accident, Marj. I was doing some gardening for someone, and accidentally slid down a slope on my bottom, which wasn'r a problem until I got near the end of the slope. I then slid sideways and a piece of hedge went into my ear, tearing the eardrum and damaging the first small bone too. At that point I realised that I couldn't hear anything at all, and it transpired that I had a growth in the other ear. It hadn't been picked up before, because the doctors assumed I was getting hard of hearing because of my age. It was a lucky accident in many ways, as the surgeon managed to remove the growth, but I am almost totally deaf in that ear too. I get lots of support from the audiologists if I ask for it, and I manage except in groups of more than 4 people. It can be very funny when I mishear something and get puzzled looks when my conversation bears absolutely no resemblance to that of the others. ;-)))))

That was a freak accident, & they say things happen for a reason. Quite a shock to you having to go thru all that trauma .....Yes I have been in that position where a yes should have been a no, visa versa but have a lot of understanding friends & family & have a laugh at my expense.
I wish you well & it's good to talk & hope it helps others that they are not alone !!!

Thanks for talking about it Amelia !!!

My Dad had bad hearing from Wartime injuries. I grew up knowing hearing was precious. I never also gave it too much more thought till my hearing started playing tricks

I am so pleased you can still enjoy the beauty of music and books.

We have so many things to be thankful for that we take for granted. It's good to be reminded. Varifocals are one of my things too and my car. Without them I would be housebound. Oh, and the internet, ordering everything from groceries to garden sheds and getting them delivered.

You are so right,Amelia. We have to thank that we can use these aids. At the moment I'm using glasses, but it's possible that in some time I could need other aids. Great shot.

That is great Amelia! I don't suffer from deafness but I have had tinnitus for the past 30 years, but like you I am so lost without my varifocals. I just wish they weren't so darn expensive!

Oh thank you for sharing this with us Amelia. Once again, we are reminded of the fact that our eyesight and hearing are a precious gift. I also rely on glasses to see the world much clearer and just this past June acquired hearing aides. So thankful for what they allow me to continue to enjoy in life. I was touched that you had someone who was there to help you adjust and be so good to offer you advice, comfort and courage to keep going. :) Mundane is not the word that I would use to describe your image, more like gifts to make your life more enjoyable. :)

It's amazing how they can enhance your life. My husband has hearing aids too and he is practically deaf without them so I can imagine how much these things mean to you.

I love your song choice! Thanks for adding to Sight and Sound, Amelia. :)

I can relate to your photo Amelia...............I'm another who wears glasses (varifocals) and I also wear hearing aids. I simply couldn't manage without them.

I've worn glasses pretty much all my life, but the hearing aids only about 6 years..........although I needed them long before that. I took a while to come to terms with the fact I was going deaf.......and a lot of "encouragement" from my wife to finally get my hearing tested..!!
