A colourful little character

A colourful little character
The Sunday Challenge this week is Inversion. I didn't really like the effects of this and and had to do something that gave me a bit more pleasure, so I followed the instructions which were given as an aid on the TSC site.

The first difficulty presented itself immediately - I didn't have a Lasso Tool; but then I found the Magnetic Lasso. That tool was a tad difficult to use but by this point I became determined.

The next problem was working with different layers which I've never done before. That was quite easy. Then I had to search to find where the Inversion tool was.

The final process was to touch up the edges of the colourful little character. I learned a lot about the power of Photoshop, enjoyed the challenge, and will never trust a digital photograph ever again. :-)

The PiPs show the original and a total inversion.

Annaig56, Erika Akire, Diane Putnam, Sylvain Wiart and 17 other people have particularly liked this photo

I didn't make it easy for myself, Janano, but ended up enjoying the challenge.

Ein super Ergebnis! Auch ich mag dieses Umkehr-Thema nicht so gern.

I think there is a lack of basic good taste in this photo, Chrissy. ;-)
I might try something much simpler.

I learned a lot, Sami, but will probably never use the inversion technique for any other photos.

One can please all of the people some of the time, and some of the people all of the time, but rarely all of the people all of the time. ;-)

You did very well with this. I've tried working with layers a few times, but seem to get lost between the different layers.

I don't think I could face up to this level of challenge very often, Harriet. It was time consuming but instructive.

Maybe it is really the problem of the "model" - or of what you invert. I hadn't any problem with Judith's plant-leafs. Not even with that purple one. The opposite did happen: I even saw it more or less naturally. It seems to be a big difference with humans. Our feeling of what is right and what isn't (or possible and not), will not allow these unusual, wrong colours on humans in a strait, direct way.

And about creating such color-keys (what it is in the end): I always use the rubber/erser (no idea how the tool is called in English) to get parts of the layer underneath visible again. Works wonderfully when you work on a very large version of your work (to scale it down later on). You are able to scale the tip from "endless" to only one pixel, choose the softnes of the edges from hard to very soft and as you work in little steps, you will be easily able to correct mistakes in going back one step (undo the last step, or so ...).

Hope, despite my non-special-English it helped a bit.

Amelia, you certainly took the challenge a lot further than I did. Bravo to you for your determination in getting outside your comfort level on this one. I think you did well and I agree your grandson is much more handsome prior to inversion. I like how the inversion worked with the tones/shading though and a crop with just the gentleman on the right would give you a totally different presentation. :)

Well Done !!

I have used Photoshop on a daily basis for years and I am always amazed by it. Most of what I have learned I have done so simply by working blind and trying things.

Wow, you really did this the hard way! I haven't yet managed the lasso tool nor working with layers...
Leaving your grandson uninverted really works so much better than the man from Mars-look;-)
