Coot chicks

Coot chicks
Baby coots look like little clowns The front half of the coot’s body is covered in orange-tipped plumes, giving them a jarring appearance. We’re not used to seeing baby birds covered bright feathers. While this orange fades rather quickly—in about six days—it still leaves them conspicuous when they are at the most vulnerable stage of their lives.

Ste, Valfal, Gudrun, tiabunna and 12 other people have particularly liked this photo

Nice capture, Coot chicks don't look very Cute. Ihave not seen any yet this season in fact adult Coots are still feeding in full view here, normally all one sees is their tail end as they run for cover.

I certainly wouldn't use the word cute at all, John They are like little bald clowns. Nevertheless, their parents were very attentive.

I was trialing a new lens today, Doug, a Tamron 70-300mm, from the sale of another camera. I would never have managed to get close enough to pick out these odd little chicks with my Canon 17-55mm. It seemed OK, if not a bit slow.

Certainly not cute, Andy. Only their parents could love love them. These little ones must have only hatched in the last couple of days.

Thank you, Peter. I don't think I have ecer seen such clownish little chicks as this. The orange feathers are there to encourage the parents to feed them, and disappear about 6 days after hatching. I'll see if I can get a prettier photo of the chicks next week.

I think only the parents find them adorable, Marie-claire. They're somewhat clownish really. ;-)

They are the strangest chicks of all I think, George, but may improve their appearance soon. The parents seemed taken with them though, and were frantically feeding them.

A lovely close shot indeed Amelia liked by me

My Tamron 18-270mm died recently but found it a quite good lens ( you took a shot with it on your Lincolnshire visit i believe ) ... i hope you get on well with your new 70-300mm and it seems you will with this start

Best wishes ... steve
