  • How Photography Is Affecting Our Brains | Tech Effects | WIRED

There are some interesting observations on this video article, like people not necessarily realizing how wide angle close up shot distorts the perspective, and how a "professional photographer" may see things differently than less experienced ones.

  • The uploading continues.

I spend every second Christmas in Brussels and hope to be there next Christmas. In 2007 when I was last in Brussels I used a Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX2 which was supposed to be a good compact digital camera. I must admit that I did not like this camera (I can't really explain why) and shortly after my return to Dublin I replaced it with a Sigma DP1 (described below). Anyway, I am now uploading the photographs in question. I should mention that the DP1 is not an easy camera to use and that people… (read more)

  • More thoughts about Avedon's "In The American West"

I mentioned in my last posting Richard Avedon 's exhibition in Berlin. I came back home and went straight away to buy a book about the pictures. I came back with 2 books, one contained the pictures themselves and one written by Laura Wilson titled “ Avedon At Work ”. Wilson accompanied Avedon in his venture as he was taking the pictures. Work extended over 6 years in which portraits of 752 people taken on 17000 large format film sheets in 17 US states and 189 towns were taken. Of all this 123… (read more)

  • 2101 Photographs Have Been Uploaded

I have managed to upload more than 2000 photographs but I still have to add descriptions and tags to many of them ... please be patient. Times are bad and may be getting worse I just received the following email regarding a site which was home for many photographers Today is a particularly sad day for all of us at JPG and 8020 Media. We've spent the last few months trying to make the business behind JPG sustain itself, and we've reached the end of the line. We all deeply believ… (read more)

  • I.N.R.I.

Don't wonder. This is the name of the book I bought one week ago. It is a beautiful book of Photgpraphs by Bettina Rheims (probably my favourite photographer) and Serge Bramly. It is a combination of text, a modern narration of the story of Jesus life and the photographic interpretation. Well at least the pictures caused big trouble with the Church, I can tell you. Anyway, I sat in my favourite Café at the Museum Ludwig in Cologne and read in the book, listened to the Live Bossa Nova music a… (read more)

Dear friends, Last week I went to see the opening of a beautiful exhibition of the photographer Antonio Girbés. It is in fact the series "Untitleds" in this website: http://www.antoniogirbes.com/ Would you please have a look at it and tell me what you think about the backgrounds? Have they been made digitally or rather painted? And if they have been made digitally then how? Any concrete hints and tricks? Please note that each one of these pictures was printed on the size of somehow 80x80… (read more)

I met this guy in Tournai. He was very interested in my cameras, and he told me that he used to be a professional photographer back in the film days (Nikon FM era). Unfortunately he could only speak French, and my French is rather limited ... it would have been interesting to learn more about him. Now we didn't get much further than cameras, the colors of the leaves and the city, his film choices, and a lot of hand gestures :-) It's a bit sad that he seems to live on the street nowadays.

  • Learning to shoot manual...

...or that is what I am planning to learn next. Inspired by "YouTuber" and photographer Sean Tucker, I try to start shooting in black and white, and use full manual mode to get that done on my Canon G5 X. My only problem is that the manual focus on Canon PowerShot cameras is no good . There are pretty much three to four dials to control speed, aperture, ISO and zoom. What is left for manual focus is a clumsy dials on back of the camera. So, I pretty much have to rely on auto focus.… (read more)

  • November 20, 2020 ipernity service break

Record for the archives To answer the many questions about what actually happened: Friday, November 20, 2020, 18:00 CET the ima-team published the fortnightly 'Club News' (previously called 'Newsflash'). For that week, this was the last action of the ima team, executed with help of the normal ipernity blog editor. Any kind of modification to the software on the servers had not been done. No new html-files had been uploaded, except the notice banner. However, this is a proven, uncritical a… (read more)

I am asking myself a question all the time: A few decades ago (and even still) it was not possible to obtain cameras with good optic or even other features to deliver a photo with good quality, objectively speaking, without distortion, blur, colour infringement, etc. Many people had to shoot with Polaroids, holgas, lomos, etc. Fascinatingly pictures came out that had bad quality but were regarded as art. In our days, what are many people doing? I am shooting with an excellent camera and excel… (read more)

  • Copyright is tough, but it tries to be fair...

Here are some useful sources to understand what all can be protected by copyright laws, and what copyright is about: Copyright rules by subject matter explained at Wikimedia Commons. And the same in French . Intellectual property wiki People often take the copyright lightly, ignores it, or simply don't know it very well. We easily refer to fair use , which more or less covers only cases in United States, but should not be stretched to cover publications globally shared on Inte… (read more)

  • What it takes to administrate a good group?

    Matryoshka

First things first. In my opinion a good group requires the joined forces. The more the merrier is often true. But it then also means that one has to be ready to compromise. If you wish to administrate a group alone, then you may not reach the success. And that is because the group can not grow beyond certain limits. Groups administrated alone are in danger to turn into a dumping grounds. People may continue contributing in them, but they really never visit the group pages to see what other grou… (read more)

  • The camera is dead, long live the camera!

The camera is dead, long live the camera!

I saw this rather interesting news shared on social media, and thought it may interest also peeps around here: ➽ Camera sales are falling sharply by Om Malik So, supposedly phone cameras are taking over. Whether this is a bad or good thing depends on the point of view. Someone could call that as a "progress", and some may see it as a "paradigm shift". Or it can be even a "philosophical revolution". We all can't be masters of photography and professionals, but that should not stop… (read more)

  • Exploring ipernity Explore

People often wonder how the images become picked to ipernity Explore . And here I try to figure it out and explain, as well as I can. The very first thing one needs to understand is that Explore is more or less an overview on what is popular during last few days. However, popularity is a tricky concept. One should keep in mind that what is popular may not match with any subjective or shared understanding on what is quality . If number of ipernity members like images of fences, or more p… (read more)

  • JPG Magazine Says Goodbye

Heute hab ich eine traurige Nachricht im Postkasten gefunden. JPG Magazine Says Goodbye Posted by Laura Brunow Miner on 1 January 2009. Sehr, sehr schade. Dort waren sehr gute Bilder eingestellt und ich hatte mich mit dem Gedanken getragen dorthin auszuwandern.
