Greetings from Winnipeg

This is an interesting Stedman card, unrecorded in the Stedman book, although an identical "Series 13" card sporting a Portage & Main image is depicted there. The card is addressed but not stamped. The message reads: "Winnipeg, Man. Will go down to see you as soon as I get home. Hoping you are all well. Best Love, James." The addressee is Miss Ardienne [sic] Rochon, Beauharnois, Que. The image is surprisingly unusual -- taken from atop the Union Station and looking north. You would think that you would see this a lot, given that it is an important stretch of the city's most important street (Main Street), but I don't think I have seen this angle before. Perhaps the management of Union Station weren't accommodating to postcard photographers. Interestingly this seems to be from a sheet of postcards that have been photographed in order to produce smaller versions. At left you can see the edge of a card showing Eaton's.

Winnipeg - Main street East Side [front]

Nice Ed Justement image of Main Street, showing the Palace Hotel. This is taken from the CPR Bridge, I expect. It is looking north from the subway. The receipt stamp is dated December 19, 1905 at Saintes-Charente-Inférieure, France. Here the Belgian printer seems to have believed that "Ed. Justement" stood for éditions Justement, which would mean "Justement Publishing (Co.)", and took it on itself to expand the abbreviation to "Edit." Of course it actually stood for "Edmond".

Scene on Decoration Day, Winnipeg, 1905

Barrowclough postcard on the usual Velox back. Inscription appears to say "1906" but I think it's really "1905" as otherwise this would be the only Barrowclough Winnipeg card from after 1905. That's unlikely as he didn't use the Velox back after about September 1905, to the best of my knowledge. A nice image. Not sure whether it's Portage or Main -- only one shop is identifiable -- Devlin's Fine Shoes (now confirmed to be at 406 Main Street, likely the McIntyre Block or one of the buildings next to it).

Strathcona Block, Winnipeg, Man.

Card by the Canadian View Card Co. of Toronto. Unused, 1/3 2/3 divided back with stamp box stating that Canada, U.S. or Mexico are one cent (don't usually see Mexico mentioned). The Strathcona Block was apartments and was also (and later on, exclusively) known as the Fort Garry Court, a name that sometimes appears on postcards wtih this identical image. The building burned down in the 1970s with considerable loss of life.

Royal Alexandra C.P.R. Hotel, Winnipeg

Valentine & Sons card no. 101,374, showing the Royal Alexandra Hotel and the C.P.R. station from Main and Higgins. Interestingly, at lower right it is signed by Eugene Haberer, who was apparently a Montreal artist and/or engraver at the time. This image may have been prepared in advance of the hotel's opening (early 1906?). It is difficult to tell whether it was done on the basis of an actual photograph or not. The buildings in the background (on the left) appear to me to be figments of the imagination (and of course there is the usual faked street life -- cars, carriages, streetcars, etc.) Would be interesting to know more about this one. The identical image is used in the Clubb/Tom Jones postcard, but the right edge is trimmed off of that one and the remaining first few letters of the Eug. Haberer signature appear to have been deliberately effaced.

5989 - The Merchant's Bank - Post Office

Russell, Lang & Co. card (as apparently republished from the Detroit Photographic Co. original -- no. 5989) and turned into a Christmas greeting card. It's an undivided back, likely from 1901 or 1902 but not dated or posted.
