Taking the high road

Leh-Manali highway across the roof of the Himalaya, at 4,500 meters altitude. The road passes over many Himalayan high passes, over 5000 meters. It is closed and under heavy snow for at least 6 months a year. The snow, landslips and erosion make the surface very unpredictable. It is often blocked or destroyed completely. It is also narrow, as it is so hard to make roads in this terrain.
So 'Highway" as it is here does not resemble anything in the west.......it takes two days to do the 420 km journey.
