Chile es uno de los mayores productores de cobre y salitre cuya explotación siempre estuvo en manos extranjeras. Su nacionalización, del salitre por el presidente Balmaceda y del cobre por Salvador Allende durante el Gobierno de la Unidad Popular, costó la vida a ambos presidentes.
Las condiciones laborales de los trabajadores del salitre eran tan complejas y brutales, que en 1907 culminaron en una gran huelga nacional y la masacre de miles de huelguistas en la trágica Matanza de la Escuela Santa María de Iquique.

Muchas gracias, Inti ....I knew that the workers were brutally exploited and that the nitrate plant was a hell to be in. I did not know the complete political background, so I was very happy to learn that from you. The deserted Santa Laura plant and Humberstone town nearby have such a sad and melancholy atmosphere. You can feel the brutal atmosphere under the surface.
I loved that area round Iquique and Arica in Northern Chile very much, by the way. ~ Diana
