Out on an island
Well, not very far out I must admit. This is on one of the islands in Moreton Bay near Brisbane. We went there on the ferry for a very pleasant lunch at the restaurant where I took this image.

Warrumbungles view
One of my favourite areas, the Warrumbungle National Park, viewed from the platform alongside the AAO telescope (see previous images). The National Park covers a little over 23,000 hectares and features the remains of a large shield volcano that was 50 km wide when it erupted 13-17 million years ago. Erosion has left a variety of bluffs, domes and dykes. The area is very popular for bushwalking and climbing. See notes and view large. HFF.
A close call
The view to the south east of the AAO telescope (see previous images) shows signs of the huge fires that ravaged the area in 2013. Over 56,000 hectares were burnt, up to and including the tree stump to the right of this image. The telescope dome was less than ten metres behind me when I took this .... it was very fortunate (and a lot of effort from fire services) that it was not destroyed. View large.

The dome in context
This wider view gives some idea of the size of the dome for the 3.9 metre AAO telescope (see earlier images).
The dome
The dome over the Australian Astronomical Observatory at Siding Springs houses a 3.9 metre telescope (see note).

The telescope
The Australian Astronomical Observatory has a 3.9 metre mirror. It is a very substantial instrument (see the technician on the balcony doing maintenance) and needed a stitch of two images to fit it into this image.

Along the jetty
Nothing like a stroll on a jetty on a warm summer's day. HFF, everyone.

Poincianas
Many of these lovely tropical street trees around Brisbane, and they are in flower for our visit. It's a long time since I'd heard this song by Caterina Valente, but it's just as good as ever.
