When I was a young teenager I liked transistor radios. They meant that many people on my chemist shop delivery after school job liked to give me their old valve radios when I asked if they had one they didn't use any more. I got many faulty radios and occasionally a good working one. This meant free parts to experiment with and working ones to 'improve' as I learnt about the radio side of electronics.
