Fence with Google Car
Parked for the last couple of nights right around the corner from us. We aren't sure if that's a real "street view recording" camera on the roof, and if so, why anyone would have the nerve to park it on the street overnight. Admittedly, our neighborhood is pretty benign ...
HFF!

It gets spookier than that. I was reading a mystery novel set in Ryde, Isle of Wight. I checked out some confusing descriptions on Google Street View, and for the next few weeks got ads for hotels in Ryde on every website I visited. Not to mention emails. But that's true of the internet as a whole. It drops mysterious files called cookies on our computer and then can track everywhere we go.

Of course, news sites always give me the weather for somewhere else, so that's reassuring. And those suggested purchases on sites like Amazon are always a laugh. It is disturbing, though, to think of the masses of incorrect conclusions about each of us that have been created by incompetent data miners, or rather by inappropriate use of data mining.

The car is nice, though. If it were brighter it could pass in Toronto for a cab.

Actually both incompetent and inappropriate use of data mining are responsible. The idea promoted by statistical software companies of "drilling down" is both, for example.
