Small Tortoiseshell

Small Tortoiseshell
The small tortoiseshell (Aglais urticae) is a colourful Eurasian butterfly in the family Nymphalidae. Adults feed on nectar and may hibernate over winter; in warmer climates they may have two broods in a season. While the dorsal surface of the wings is vividly marked, the ventral surface is drab, providing camouflage. Eggs are laid on the common nettle, on which the larvae feed. Quoted from Wikipedia

They seem to love thistles. We walk around a local farmer's field at least twice a week, and we always see small tortoiseshells. He's just harvested the wheat, but has left untouched the wild flower strip.

I have been seeing a lot of small tortoiseshells and orange tips, Amelia. This time last year, I couldn't believe how many painted ladies I was seeing. Thanks for your very kind comment. All the best, Joe

Your framing and detail are superb on this shot Joe. I love the background, it enhances the butterfly beautifully. Cheers, Rosa.

Thanks, Rosa, I am starting to upload some of the also rans I took during my self-challenge of June; the 'Yellow Irises', the ' Marsh or Spotted Orchid' and this one fall into this category. I love this shot, but it took second place to my shot of the cruise ship. I am pleased you like it. Cheers, Joe
