Paul, John, George, Ringo, and Topo Revisited

Paul, John, George, Ringo, and Topo Revisited
To honor Sir Paul McCartney's 75th birthday, June 18, a repeat of the content of two earlier posts.

My Dad shot these Polaroids from our TV the night of February 23, 1964, for my sister and me. – The Topo was mine.

We can date this appearance by the backdrop used. A youtube poster says this: "The final of The Beatles' first three Ed Sullivan Show broadcasts had been pre-recorded back in New York City at the beginning of their trip. For this show (broadcast on this date, February 23, in 1964), the band played Twist and Shout, Please Please Me and I Want To Hold Your Hand. The program went out the day after The Beatles had landed back on British soil, after they'd fulfilled their long-held dream of winning-over the USA." So this last of three Sullivan show appearances of February 1964 was among the first recorded.

You can see a badly-cropped couple of minutes of the performance here (I hope): www.youtube.com/watch?v=tOcMkI7KVS4

The top pic appears in this video around the 1:16 mark. Pic two is probably right at the beginning of the clip. I'm unsure the third. Perhaps it's from the second or third song.

Happy for Topo to be here but who or what is / was Topo?

Sullivan had every major rock act of the era, along with a small Italian mouse puppet named Topo Gigio. I may be wrong, but I think Topo was on Sullivan one of those February '64 nights.

Ha! I remember Topo Gigio very well! My Italian immigrant grandmother loved him. :)

Whatever became of those English lads, anyway?

Ahh, glad to learn your grandmother was a fan. He was awfully cute.

The lads made good. They made a lot of people happy too.

Thanks, Tim!

Thank you, Nicolas. This would have been the perfect moment to pull out my Paul McCartney Beatle doll/figure from 1964. Maybe soon.
