Bitzinger's Würstelstand vor der Albertina bzw. hinter der Staatsoper gehört zu meinen beliebtesten Würstelständen in Wien. Wohl, weil es noch einen zweiten Bitzinger Würstelstand beim Riesenrad im Wiener Prater gibt, wurde jenem bei der Albertina als eindeutiges Unterscheidungsmerkmal eine Kopie von Albrecht Dürer's berühmten Hasen auf's Dach gesetzt, zumal sich Dürer's Original in der Gemäldesammlung der Albertina gleich danben befindet. Bitzinger's sausage stand in front of the Albertina and behind the State Opera is one of my favourite sausage stands in Vienna. Probably because there is a second Bitzinger sausage stand near the Giant Ferris Wheel in the Viennese Prater, a copy of Albrecht Duerer's famous rabbit was placed on the roof of the one near the Albertina as a clear distinguishing feature, especially since Duerer's original is in the Albertina's painting collection right next door.

Wieder einmal ein anderes, deftiges Mittagessen, diesmal beim Bitzinger Würstelstand vor der Albertina. Links meine Portion mit gebratener Burenwurst, scharfem Senf, Ketchup, einem Scherzel Brot (nicht sichtbar, weil in meiner Hand) und einem halb hell, halb dunkel gemischtem Bier aus Wien-Ottakring. Rechts Ursula's Portion mit geräucherter Waldviertler, frischem Kren, einem Sandwich-Wecken und einem Zitronen-Radler aus Wien-Ottakring, Hat wie erwartet wieder Alles gut geschmeckt ! Another hearty lunch, this time at Bitzinger's sausage stand in front of the Albertina. On the left, my portion with roasted Boer sausage, hot mustard, ketchup, a Scherzel of bread (not visible because in my hand) and a half light, half dark mixed beer from Vienna-Ottakring. On the right Ursula's portion with smoked Waldviertler sausage, fresh horseradish, a sandwich roll and a lemon Radler (light beer with lemon) from Vienna-Ottakring, As expected, everything tasted good again !

Die Wiener Staatsoper, das „Erste Haus am Ring“, ist eines der bekanntesten Opernhäuser der Welt. Sie wurde am 25. Mai 1869 eröffnet. Bereits Ende 1861 begann der Bau nach Plänen der Architekten August Sicard von Sicardsburg und Eduard van der Nüll im Stil der Neorenaissance, der insgesamt acht Jahre dauerte. The Viennese State Opera, the "First House on the Ring", is one of the most famous opera houses in the world. It was opened on 25 May 1869. The construction began as early as the end of 1861 according to plans of the architects August Sicard von Sicardsburg and Eduard van der Nuell in the Neo-Renaissance style, which took a total of eight years.

1876 erwarb der Gastronom und Hotelier Eduard Sacher den Gebäudekomplex hinter der damaligen k.k. Hofoper, der heutigen Staatsoper. und eröffnete das Hôtel de l'Opéra mit Restaurant, Bar und Café. Sein Sohn Franz Sacher benannte des Hotel und die Gastronomiebetriebe in Sacher um. Von Anfang an zählte das Sacher zu den besten Adressen in der Stadt Wien. Das Café wurde 2004 mit der "Goldenen Kaffeebohne" von Jacobs ausgezeichnet. Kein Wunder, daß Touristen Schlange stehen, um dort ihre Melange trinken und die berühmte Sachertorte essen zu können. His son Franz Sacher renamed the hotel and the catering businesses Sacher. From the beginning, the Sacher was one of the best addresses in the City of Vienna. The Café was awarded the "Golden Coffee Bean" by Jacobs in 2004. No wonder tourists queue up to drink their Melange and eat the famous Sacher torte there.

Die in der ersten Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts erbaute Karlskirche in Wien steht unter Denkmalschutz. Sie liegt an der Südseite des zentrumsnahen Karlsplatzes und ist einer der bedeutendsten barocken Kirchenbauten nördlich der Alpen und eines der Wahrzeichen Wiens. Die beiden das Kirchenportal flankierenden Säulen imitieren die römische Trajanssäule, wurden aus Zogelsdorfer Kalksandstein (nahe Eggenburg) hergestellt und die spiralförmigen Reliefs stammen von den Bildhauern Johann Baptist Mader, Johann Baptist Straub und Jakob Christoph Schletterer. Der Wiener Hochstrahlbrunnen befindet sich am Rande des Stadtzentrums am Schwarzenbergplatz und wurde aus Anlass der Fertigstellung der I. Wiener Hochquellenwasserleitung nach einer Bauzeit von vier Monaten am 24. Oktober 1873 im Beisein von Kaiser Franz Joseph I. in Betrieb genommen. Dahinter, südlich des Hochstrahlbrunnens, befindet sich das Heldendenkmal der Roten Armee, das zur Erinnerung an rund 17.000 (!!!) bei der Schlacht um Wien gegen Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges gefallene Soldaten der Roten Armee 1945 errichtet wurde. The Viennese high-jet fountain is located on the outskirts of the city centre on the plaza Schwarzenbergplatz and was commissioned in the presence of Emperor Franz Joseph I on 24 October 1873 to mark the completion of the 1st Vienna High Spring Water Pipeline after a construction period of four months. Behind it, to the south of the high-jet fountain, is the Red Army Heroes' Monument, erected in memory of nearly 17,000 (!!!) Red Army soldiers who fell in the Battle of Vienna towards the end of the Second World War in 1945.

Das Hotel Intercontinental in Wien gegenüber dem Stadtpark präsentiert sich im Baustil der 1960er Jahre als feudale Bettenburg und ist, wenn kein Hochhaus so doch ein hohes Haus mit 12 Stockwerken über dem Erdgeschoß. Seit Jahren gibt es Pläne, das Intercontinental abzureißen und durch ein modernes Hochhaus zu ersetzen. Doch auch nach etlichen Planänderungen ist die UNESCO nicht zufrieden und droht weiterhin, bei Realisierung der aktuellen Pläne der Wiener Innenstadt den Status als UNESCO Weltkulturerbe abzuerkennen. Interessant finde ich, daß die UNESCO der Wiener Innenstadt dieses Prädikat trotz der Unvereinbarkeit (siehe PiP) mit dem bestehenden, übergroßen Intercontinental seinerzeit überhaupt zusprach. For years, there have been plans to demolish the Intercontinental and replace it with a modern high-rise building. But even after several changes of plans, UNESCO is not satisfied and continues to threaten to withdraw the status of UNESCO World Heritage Site from Vienna's inner city if the current plans are realized. I find it interesting that UNESCO awarded this title to Vienna's City at all, despite the incompatibility (see PiP) with the existing, oversized Intercontinental.

Am Kaptell der Säulen stützen je zwei Adler einen Lorbeer-Kranz, in dem die Initialen O und W (für Otto Wagner) eingebettet sind. Eine leider oft übersehene künstlerische Zugabe an dem ohnehin schon beeindruckenden Park-Eingang. Gleich neben dem Eingang zum Wiener Stadtpark beim Ohmann'schen Wienfluß-Portal befindet sich das Gebäude der U-Bahn-Station Stadtpark. Wie alle Stationsgebäude entlang der U-Bahn von Wien-Hietzing bis zum Donaukanal wurde auch dieses von Otto Wagner im Jugendstil errichtet. Right next to the entrance to the Vienna Stadtpark at Ohmann's Vienna River Portal is the building of the City Park underground station. Like all station buildings along the underground line from Vienna-Hietzing to the Danube Canal, this one was also built by Otto Wagner in Art Nouveau style.

Während die Stationsbauten der ehemaligen Stadtbahn (wie hier jene der Wiener U-Bahn-Station Stadtpark) seit ihrer Errichtung im Jugendstil optisch unverändert blieben, hat sich die Technik der Bahn mehrmals verändert. Es begann gegen Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts mit einer Stadtbahn mit Dampfantrieb, in den 1920er Jahren wurde sie auf elektirschen Abtrieb umgestellt, in den 1970er Jahren wurde aus der Stadtbahn die leistungsfähigere U-Bahn und in den letzten Jahren wurde die U-Bahn auf Waggons der aktuellen 5. Generation aufgerüstet. While the station buildings of the former light railway (like this one of Vienna's Stadtpark underground station) have remained visually unchanged since their construction in the Art Nouveau style, the technology of the railway has changed several times. It began towards the end of the 19th century with a steam-powered light railway, in the 1920s it was converted to electric traction, in the 1970s the light railway became the more powerful underground and in recent years the underground has been upgraded to carriages of the current 5th generation.

Die Wienfluß-Promenade im Wiener Stadtpark an ihrem Beginn beim Hotel Intercontinental in der Johannesgasse wird an jeder Seite von einem großen steinernen Pavillon flankiert. Das Wienfluß-Portal und die Promenade wurden von Friedrich Ohmann, einem Schüler Otto Wagners, im Jugendstil errichtet und 1906 eröffnet. The Vienna River Promenade in Vienna's City Park at its beginning at the Hotel Intercontinental in Johannesgasse is flanked on each side by a large stone pavilion. The Vienna River Portal and Promenade were built by Friedrich Ohmann, a pupil of Otto Wagner, in Art Nouveau style and opened in 1906.

Ursula posiert hier mit einer der vier Jahreszeiten-Büsten, der Frühlings-Maid, auf der Wienfluß-Promenade im Wiener Stadtpark. Daß es bereits Sommer ist, war ihr egal; Hauptsache war, daß ihre weißen Waldviertler-Schuhe mit auf's Foto kamen. ;-) Ursula is posing here with one of the four seasonal busts, the Spring Maiden, on the Vienna River Promenade in Vienna's City Park. She didn't care that it was already summer; the main thing was that her white Waldviertler shoes also were on the photo ;-)
