Das „neue“ k.k. Hofburgtheater am Ring gegenüber dem Rathaus, ist ein Bau des Historismus. Davor war das "alte" Burgtheater mit seinem Ensemble am Michaelerplatz in der Hofburg untergebracht. Das neue Burgtheater am Ring wurde 1869 von Gottfried Semper (Grundriss) und Karl Freiherr von Hasenauer (Fassade) in den Formen der italienischen Hochrenaissance gemeinsam entworfen und von 1874 bis 1888 erbaut. Die Innenausstattung des Burgtheaters weist eine üppig barockisierende Ausstattung auf. Das Burgtheater gilt als eine der bedeutendsten Bühnen Europas

The "new" k.k. Imperial Court Castle Theatre on the Ring street opposite the town hall is a historicist building. Before that, the "old" Imperial Court Castle Theatre and its ensemble were housed on the plaza Michaelerplatz in the rooms of the Imperial Court Castle.
