You're supposed to look through the tube to see Telescope Peak, but either the base has been moved, or the seismic action in Panamint Valley is greater than expected, as the tube actually points a little to the north of Telescope Peak.

The Forty-Niners burned their wagons near the current location of Stovepipe Wells so they could smoke the flesh of their starving oxen. The meat wasn't very nutritious, but they now had a lighter load and needed less water.
