Collage of a garden raider

Collage of a garden raider
Opened the patio door to see this Sparrow Hawk down the garden having a late lunch, she decided I wasn't going to bother her and carried on regardless. Went back in, picked up a camera and stood in the open doorway to get a few images.

Frans Schols, Helena Ferreira, Tractacus, Jeff Farley and 9 other people have particularly liked this photo

They are very beautiful birds Roger, but one we dread in our gardens. Some poor little bird has given him a good lunch! I like your collage very much.

They are regular visitors here and seen quite often eyeing up the prey. I guess that is the problem with feeding the garden birds, amongst the usual regulars we have somewhere around fifty Sparrows, maybe more, inhabiting the Ivy hedge. Generally can tell when the hawk is around, everything goes quiet for a while; Thanks Rosa!

Well taken Roger, Had the same here a few days back when a hawk snatched a bird straight off the bird bath. Unfortunately no camera handy. Looking at the feathers lying around seems it might have been a decent sized prey.

Thanks Maurice, they do move very fast and we often have them ambushing prey at very short range. The female will take on pigeons and similar size birds at times.

Thanks Jeff, luckily had time to get the nearest camera as the bird was a bit preoccupied with a late lunch!
