Look like wood turning tools to me Roger and seen a bit of service too. I suspect the widest one at the top snapped in half sometime in its lifetime.

I think that the wider Mitchell gouge was just well used Maurice, one of the smaller gouges is stamp dated at 1916 on the back. These were possibly from my great grandfathers days, he would have used a variety of cutting edge tools carving shoe lasts. I used to have a carved Boxwood shoe last of one of my father's feet from his teenage years, unfortunately lost to worm invasion many years ago (the last of course, my father died in 1983).

Hello Roger, Sorry I didn't realise these had a family collection, I had a wood turning lathe in my shed up until a couple of years ago and also a set of turning tools new circa 1985 looking much like these, admittedly mine were much longer. I did however get a bit ambitious one day with my wider gouger on a piece of oak and snapped the blade and nearly my fingers to a similar length.as that shown.

Hi Maurice, apologies unnecessary, although not these gouges, I do have some old chisels that look as though they may have been modified for turning of sorts. Just about to embark on a bit of turning practice myself, I'll watch out for the catch and snatch!

Interesting series of well used tools Roger, I still have my old lead working tools from the late 1950s

Thanks Roger; I am loath to dispense with any old tools, still have a few from my drafting days, but got shot of the parallel motion board a while back, took up too much space!
