Somerset Bridge

Somerset Bridge
Medieval Bridges - Elstead to Eashing
Somerset Bridge between Peperharrow to Elstead.
A 13thC packhorse bridge

Northwards up away from Elstead the river Wey passes beneath
Somerset Bridge on its way towards Peperharrow.
Thought to be one of the original medieval bridges built by the
Waverley Abbey monks although it is now much altered
and tied with strengthening irons following centuries of repairs,
many quite extensive after flood damage,. A brick parapet was
added in the 19th century.
Prior to the monks’ bridge there was only a ford here documented
as 'Sumaeres Forda' or ‘Somersford’ referring to a local family
name of Somer.
