The artillery observation officer would sit on top of the pole behind his 'armoured' screen spotting the enemy positions for determining aiming of field guns etc; definitely a risky position to be in.

His role was observer and artillery 'sighter', I believe; note the steel shield behind which he sat the protect against sniper fire!
