The William Walker

The William Walker
A Victorian pub overlooking the Cathedral Close. This is the man it was named after.

When huge cracks started to appear in the early 1900s, Winchester Cathedral seemed in danger of complete collapse. Early efforts to underpin its waterlogged foundations failed until William Walker, a deep-sea diver, worked under water every day for six years placing bags of concrete. You’ll find a small statue of him at the far end of the Cathedral.

Worthy of more than a small statue I'd have thought! Ah, OK. A pub as well! That's OK then!

Amazing what we learn, just taking photos! If you get a chance, look him up...what a man! Yes I think the pub may attract more people :)

En hele mooie foto met een interessant verhaal,Rosa! Deze man verdiend een groot standbeeld zoals Andy zei. Misschien staat dat wel binnen in de pub? Beste wensen Frans.....

I think his statue is in the Cathedral Close Frans but I was not aware of it until I looked up about the name of this pub. I really want to go back to Winchester as there was so much I did not see. Pleased you like the picture. Best wishes, Rosa.

A dedicated and I would say brave man Rosa. The pub seems to me to be a great tribute to him;-) A very nice shot and good informative notes by the way.

Best wishes, Doug

He certainly was Doug. I like it when pubs are named to celebrate a local hero. I would never have known about William Walker had I not taken this picture, and I am very pleased that I now do. Thank you for your kind comments. Best wishes, Rosa.
