Have you ever done b&w for any extended period of time? I think it's really hard in nature (really have no idea how Ansel Adams did it!), but doing it can start to take one a bit away from subject matter and more towards feeling and sensation. Then of course there's shallow depths of field, low light (which can be found even in the sun by finding the small shadow areas) and focusing on hues that are great to work with.
Have you looked at my personal group 'pure art' www.ipernity.com/group/2410700 ? It's full of other people's photos here that I put in this type category. Even the in focus, straight photos are more about the emotion or the composition than the subject specifically.
