Männchen werden lange vorher von einem jüngeren Konkurrenten getötet oder vertrieben, finden kein Rudel mehr und verhungern. Häufig werden sie daher nicht älter als sieben bis zwölf Jahre. Im Zoo haben manche Löwen jedoch bis zu 34 Jahre gelebt.
