The Bennett Building

The Bennett Building
139 Fulton Street - Named for James Gordon Bennett, Jr. publisher of the New York Herald who built it. It is a cast iron buiding designed by Arthur D. Gilman. Construction began in 1872 and was completed a year later. Originally 6 stories tall with a mansard roof, in the early 1890s, Architect James M. Farnsworth was emloyed by a new owner to enlarge the building. He stripped off the mansard roof and added four floors keeping Gilman’s original exterior design.
