How do bus fares and train fares compare over any particular route?

In England pensioners have free bus travel after 9.30. Currently there is a Government subsidized flat bus fare of £2 to help with the cost of living 'crisis'. Train fares vary according to the time of day and how far ahead you book. It is massively complicated and yet the government is set on closing most of the booking offices and making you use vending machines or online booking. Generally rail is far more expensive than bus or coach.
