The Hop & Malt Exchange Southwark 26 1 2009
Details of the sculptures on this building can be seen at www.ipernity.com/doc/philsutters/25875055
This was claimed to be the largest hop exchange in the country, selling hops from Hereford in the west of England and Kent in the east and various places in between. Nearby breweries accounted for a large proportion of the capital's beer production. There were still horse-drawn drays delivering the products when I first started work in Southwark in the mid-'60s.
