Thanks, Graham. I think that this is probably a Red-eared Slider Turtle, as one has been in the pond in previous years. There was talk of there being two this year, but I've only seen the one and only at an angle where the red ear has been hidden. It is probably a dumped pet. As for the Moorhen chick, it is one of a resident family. They are not the cutest of babies, especially when their long legs and huge feet can be seen out of the water.

Edit - I have now seen two turtles together on the island. It is difficult to see them at a distance, but I think that they may be different species, as the shells look different.

Does England have native tortoises/turtles or are they escaped pets etc?
