Warship class D852 Tenacious on up mail train at Highbridge mid 1963
This set of photographs is by the late Reverend John Sutters. They are part of a collection of railway photographs, taken mainly in the 1950's & 60's, that have now been digitised by his son Phil. A copy of the collection, as it relates to Somerset, has been deposited in the Somerset Heritage Centre, which will open to the public in September 2010. www1.somerset.gov.uk/archives/
The mail pick-up happened around 6 - 6.30pm I think. It was only about 3-4 minutes walk from the Vicarage, across the A38 and down to the end of Springfield Road, so we went over quite often to watch the postman set up the bag on the 'gallows' and then see it whisked off by the net, that was swung out from the TPO's side. The reverse was also happening, with the leather bag hanging off the train being caught by a large net on the trackside.
