One of the photos taken on a family trip to Amberley Museum & Heritage Centre, in West Sussex. We travelled Groupsave from Seaford to Lewes, then to Haywards Heath, on to Three Bridges and then down the Bognor Regis line to Amberley.

Do the kids know what to do with the dial?

They were too impatient to wait for the dial to go back to the start point - not that that mattered as I don't think this one was connected. In the telecommunications exhibition there were ones which you could dial between and talk to someone the other side of the room. That was much more fun. The Amberley Museum is one of the best family outings that I know.

Where we lived previously we had a dial wallphone, among others. A friend of my youngest daughter, primary school age, had a friend over, they finished what they were doing and the visitor wanted to ring her mum to take her home. I pointed to the phone, she tentatively lifted the handset and blankly looked at the dial. My daughter had to show her how to use it.
