Putnam Oak

Putnam Oak
My daughter always wants to look through the hole in this gnarly oak tree. Just a few minutes after the last picture! Printed 22 November 2013.

You probably cannot tell from the scan, but I tried a different approach to printing this. I use "split grade" printing, and normally choose the low contrast exposure based on the highlights. Here they are in the grass and on the tree's trunk. But for this print, I used an extra stop low contrast exposure and just dodged a little- a very different way to think about the whole print. I was very happy with this print at first, it brought out those little clouds close to the horizon that I didn't even know were there! But after comparing carefully with my first print of this, it lost "sparkle" in the grass and on the tree and an overall feeling of sunshine on the right. Maybe a little more dodging would bring it back, but I'm looking forward to trying this idea again. What I liked the most was that it felt like I was working on the balance of the whole print all at once...
