Well captured Maggs. A bit of local history here. There were Clarks factories in Bridgwater too.- in St John Street and then in Redgate street at the end of Piggy Lane. All long gone of course.
We always bought Clarks shoes for the children as they measured their feet properly. Lovely soft leather - but that is progress I guess - soft plastic now in a lot of shoes!!!!!

Oh, I remember that from my childhood :-) Not Clarks as we didn't have them over here, but shoe stores where they measured one's feet. I was especially fascinated by their "x-ray machine" where you had to slip your feet underneath wearing your potential new shoe purchases!
And sadly, you're so right about soft plastic these days instead of soft leather. It's really difficult to find those, and if you do, then it's an extremely thin layer of soft leather glued on top of some mesh fabric underneath. Solid leather...well, I guess if you're willing to pay a fortune, you can still get it :-(

Yup, my two had Clarks, I did too, I used to love the X-ray machine they used to check the fit way back when!!

Plastic is so hot and sweaty - yuk!

Here you can still find quite affordable solid leather, but less and less. Some I have last since the 80s and still good to go.

Good to know...whenever I'll go to Portuga (hopefully in the near future), I hope they still have some. It wasn't a problem here 30 years ago and I still have leather shoes that are that old. Good quality! :-)

Had Clarks shoes when young, considered a luxury and I had to save for months till I could afford them, but they lasted... lasted... made the purchase a good investment:

Yes, my Mother always purchased Clark shoes for school as well. We also used to use the X Ray machine to check on the size and fitting. We lived in Shaftesbury.

OMG - I lived in East Knoyle and on decent days cycled up the hill to the Girl's Grammar. We probably used the same shop!
