Ruins
Corfe Castle was built by the Normans in the 11th century and destroyed in 1646 by Oliver Cromwell's Parliamentarians at the end of the first English Civil War. Its then owner was Sir John Bankes, the Attorney General to Charles I, who survived the first siege and then was allowed to leave the castle with his family and supporters before the bombardment began.
