10-Week Picture Projects: Opposites, Week 10: (August 10-16): Bumpy Im Innenhof des Rathauses befindet sich der Hygieia-Brunnen, gestaltet 1895/1896 von dem Bildhauer Joseph von Kramer (1841–1908). Die weibliche Bronzefigur, die Hygieia, eine Allegorie für Gesundheit, tritt auf einen Drachen, der symbolisch für die Choleraepidemie von 1892 steht. Auch praktisch steht dieser Brunnen für Hygiene, da sich in seinem Sockel die Einlässe des Belüftungssystems des Rathauses befinden. Ursprünglich war auf dem Platz eine Figur des Handelsgottes Merkur geplant. Nach der großen Choleraepidemie mit Tausenden von Toten entschied man sich aus Imagegründen jedoch für die Göttin der Reinheit. Die die Hygieia umgebenden Figuren stellen den Nutzen und die Verwendung des Wassers dar. Aus Wikipedia The Hygieia Fountain, located in the City Hall's inner court has been created 1895/1896 by Joseph von Kramer. The allegoric female bronze sculpture of the goddess of cleaniness steps on a dragon, which stands for the cholera epidemic of 1892 with a death toll of more than 8.600 among Hamburg's population. Initially a statue of Mercury, the god of merchants - compliant to hanseatic tradition - was planned, but in the aftermath of the epidemic that plan has been abandoned in favour of the Hygieia.
