France, April 2008
Visiting Mum White (Jane), along with Becky, at St. Claud. We touristed to Rochefoucault, pilgrimaged to Oradour-sur-Glane, stumbled upon the home of Cardinal Richelieu, stopped off at Rouen, and finally, almost at Calais, found a much less tampered-with monument in the form of Batterie Todt. Willi Betz 19, Eddie Stobart 12, by the way.
Batterie Todt — no observation without affecting
|
|
At the Batterie Todt, number 4 bunker, near Calais — once a German gun which could fire far enough to reach England.
Found, by chance, with refreshing lack of healh-and-safety mania, or indeed "restoration".
This whole place was a really powerful antidote to the experience I had at Oradour (see later in this set) where the well-intentioned "preservation" of the place had robbed it of all emotion for me.

It was pitch black down here in the magazine, so I was using my camera's flashgun as a means of getting glimpses of rooms.
Needless to say, this one lept out and scared the **** out of me.
