Stinking Iris Berries

Stinking Iris Berries
The Stinking Iris plant gets its name from the faint smell of rotten meat which you get if you rub
the leaves together . The berries are toxic to a lot of mammals including dogs and humans.

If left, the berries will stay on the plant all through winter. I'm trying to eradicate them from the garden so I dig up the plants as soon as I find them. I obviously missed this one :-)

Don't think I'll rub one then Keith! I hadn't heard of the stinking iris either! Sounds like a good one to replace with something pleasant smelling :-) It's a great shot though Keith, with the detail we have come to expect from you.

Take care and have a good weekend.

Thanks Rosa.................I'd definitely avoid them if I were you, especially as you have a regular doggie visitor!

Glad you like the shot though............and have a good weekend yourself. We actually got a bit of sunshine this morning, but just after we went out it started raining again, so we gave up and went home!

Yes............great for photography, but not so great in the garden, especially as my daughter regularly brings her dog to visit.

Glad you like the photo - I used an Olympus twin-light flash for it (it's a good flash still, even though it's been superseded).

Now if you had eliminated this stinky iris berry, then you wouldn't have been able to show us this plant and tell us about its weird name. I wish you a very good weekend to come.

I have to dig these Iris foetidissima out of the garden because they seed so proficiently. Lovely dehiscence though, Keith. I've just read your description - and I se you have the same problem. ;-))

Keith Burton club has replied to Amelia club
I have no doubt that I'll find some more before the year is out Amelia. This time I'll dig them out before they go to seed. Glad you like the dehiscence (I had to look that one up)!

Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

As beautiful as toxic. It looks like a piñata with red fruits. I didn't know these plants were so stubborn.

Keith Burton club has replied to Anton Cruz Carro club
Thank you for your comments Anton............yes, you only have to miss a tiny piece of the plant and it will grow again! I'll have to pay more attention this year :-)

Thanks Colin. As far as I know the berries aren't toxic to birds, but I've never seen them being eaten by a bird either!

Die rote Farbe könnte verlockend sein für Kinder. Insofern ist es gut, dass du sie entfernst. Aber fürs Foto eine tolle Farbe.
