Roadside Wildflowers

Roadside Wildflowers
Taken along the road that runs over the top of Old Winchester Hill, Hampshire. It's becoming more and more common in England for grass verges alongside roads to be left to grow rather than being mowed short, which is great for wildlife.

Günter Klaus, trester88, MaggsMep, Fred Fouarge and 14 other people have particularly liked this photo

The fireweed adds a great splash of colour to the soft green and white, beautiful! A good thing they let it all grow, we need much mir of that.

Schitterende opname van de wegberm.
Bij mij zijn ze ook eindelijk bij het besef gekomen om de bermen minder te maaien, nu zie ik ook veel meer vlinders en beien.
Hartelijke groeten, Frans.

Thank you very much Frans...........I think people are starting to recognise we need to do more to encourage nature and that is much more important than neat and tidy roadsides.

I hear they still cut them back every June in Cornwall (when they're at their very best) due to the Council's fear of being sued by litigious drivers complaining of a hindered lane view (It's true, driving on the country lanes then does become more problematic. But people should just be more careful!). It's so sad to see great swathes of glorious colour being mown down!

I can't see the problem personally..........as long as road signs and markings are visibile and the foliage is cut back on blind corners, road junctions etc, they should be able to leave the rest to grow! People need to take responsibility for their own driving!

It is lovely to see these flowers growing along the roadside now. Even roundabouts in towns around here are looking less formal and a riot of wild colour. I can understand it along some of the narrow Cornish roads, that Andy tells of, but it is a shame.

It's a really pretty picture Keith.

Definitely prettier than plain grass. It probably needs to be mowed every year to prevent it growing up in trees.

Call me a cynic but I think the various councils are all happy to leave the roadsides unmown as it saves them money.

But I’m more than happy with the results when I’m driving around and when I see such a colourful image, Keith.

Nice one my friend!

I think your cynicism is probably justified Maggie................but as you say the results are well worth it. Glad you like this one and thank you.

Ich mag alle Blüten, die die Insekten auch mögen. Wie schön die Natur sein kann, wenn man sie denn lässt. Eine schöne Aufnahme, Keith!
