.. In The Still Of The Night... a poem by Howard Brace
Secure the night from the shadow
draw back the sheets from the bed
douse the flickering candle
there's a pillow of dreams for your head.
In the still of the night, in the darkness
in the hollowed out space, there within
lay your presence of nearness, beside me
as the onset of night begins.
Where through the night in this haven
you're the stars that shine in my sky
in peace, there you lay, safe and treasured
as the hours until dawn pass by.

Boats of White, a poem by Angelica Duardo
I will sail away
In boats of white
I won’t return until the sun
Shines back in bloom
In midway May
I will sail between
The garden, east and west
On flowers, softness
I will sleep in bliss
And kiss the moon
May, will be the month
When I come back to you
In boats of white
With chiffon wings
I’ll sail above the stream
And we’ll dance along
The chant of birds in love
We’ll have a feast on wine and love
With ribbons tied in blue
I will sail away
In boats of white
I won’t return until the sun
Shines back in bloom,
Eternal May.

I must go down to the seas again..
|
|
|
One of my favourite poems, by John Masefield
I MUST go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,
And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by,
And the wheel's kick and the wind's song and the white sail's shaking,
And a gray mist on the sea's face, and a grey dawn breaking.
I must go down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide
Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied;
And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying,
And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying.
I must go down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life,
To the gull's way and the whale's way, where the wind's like a whetted knife;
And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover,
And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick's over.

Fishing boats in North Norfolk
|
|
Some of the famous Cromer Crab fishing boats.
Crab are a large part of the income of the town of Cromer. Historically the crab were only caught in the summer months, in autumn the fishermen brought Herring to the town, and winter cod was the main catch. This has now changed to solely bringing crab and lobster to the town.
The Cromer Crab in particular are known for their tender flesh, and high proportion of white meat to dark. The fleet has reduced to about a dozen boats, looking after about 200 crab pots, meaning that it is even more of a specialty!

Fire rescue on the Thames

On Explore for 2days, 14th and 15th June, Highest rank 273..
A fireboat is a specialized watercraft and with pumps and nozzles designed for fighting shoreline and shipboard fires. The first fireboats, dating to the late 18th century, were tugboats, retrofitted with firefighting equipment.
Older designs derived from tugboats and modern fireboats more closely resembling seafaring ships can both be found in service today. Some departments would give their multi-purpose craft the title of "Fireboat" also.
They are frequently used for fighting fires on docks and shore side warehouses as they can directly attack fires in the supporting underpinnings of these structures. They also have an unlimited supply of water available, pumping directly from below the hull and can be used to assist shore based firefighters when other water is in low supply or is unavailable, for example, due to earthquake breakage of water mains, as happened in San Francisco due to the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake.
Fireboats are most usually seen by the public when welcoming a fleet or historical ships with a display of their water moving capabilities, throwing large arcs of water in every direction.

On a mission. (3)
Cromer lifeboat station is an RNLI station located in the town of Cromer in the English county of Norfolk. The station operates two lifeboats - one for inshore work and the other for offshore work.
The current lifeboat station on the end of Cromer pier was re-built in 1999 to replace the smaller older one which was re-located to Southwold in Suffolk where it is used as a lifeboat museum. Cromer Lifeboat station is one of the most famous of all the lifeboat stations operated by the RNLI.
There has been a lifeboat service operated from Cromer for two centuries - predating the establishent of the RNLI. The volunteer crews at Cromer have gained a record of gallantry stretching back to the beginnings of the RNLI. Some of the most notable rescues and service have been carried out by famous coxswains such as Henry Blogg and Henry Davies and their crews. To date there have been awards of 45 Bronze medals, 8 Silver medals and 3 Gold medals.
