Micrometeoroids
Created with Glitch Lab & Picmonkey
Space Debris is an umbrella term that refers to the countless number of small natural and man-made items that orbit Earth and represent a risk to spacecraft. The technical term is Micrometeoroids and Orbital Debris to capture both types of debris.
1) More than 5,00,000 pieces of debris or space junk are tracked as they orbit the earth.
2) The space debris all travel by speed up to 17,500 mph, which is fast enough for a relatively small piece of orbiting debris to damage a satellite or a space craft.

And let us not forget that the earth travels round the sun, a distance of approximately 93,000,000 * 2 * 3.14159 miles in 365 *24 hours, so we can easily calculate its own speed through space of around 67,000 MPH. So, if it came across anything else on its travels, we have a big speed of collision!!
Best Wishes, and a good weekend
Peter
