Missed the perfect shot as I turned around and an open-topped tourist bus was coming through the first arch, wonderfully lit by the low sun. But I'd just switched off to save batteries!
Tower Bridge
The Bridge was a triumph of Victorian Engineering as no bridge had ever been built downstream of the Roman London Bridge. It was opened in 1894 and designed by Sir Horace Jones and engineer John Wolfe-Barry. Although clad in stone (to match the Tower) it has a steel frame and is of the bascule type. Tower Subway
To the west of Tower Bridge under the river is the forgotten Tower Subway - which was built in 1870 by James Greathead. It used a shuttle to transport 12 people under the river. However, after a few months it was taken out of service but it is still the world's first passage train tunnel. It became a successful pedestrian subway until it was made redundant by Tower Bridge and now transports water mains only!
