They call it progress, but I think progress has gone on enough now.

The council calls it Transform Oxford, which means turning it into Same Town Anywhere.

With a beautiful, unique city like Oxford, why "transform" it? Perhaps "Deform Oxford" would be more apt.

Councillor Cook (in charge of street furniture) is keen to attract more tourists. So the quaint old cast-iron fingerposts have been replaced with soulless shiny high-tech Q-code signs, and the quaintly shabby black-and-gold litter bins have been usurped by big-mouthed metal cans.

The former black bus-shelters have gone Clear Channel Adshel, so that the advertising revenue can pay for their upkeep, which means that we now have flashy ads in front of our historic buildings, not to mention the obligatory 'pedestrian zone' signs, 'traffic enforcement cameras' signs, and other roadside clutter demanded by the EU. So it's actually quite difficult for tourists to get any good photographs without the eyesore junk.

(and now the eyesore ZEZ signs too)

'Deform Oxford' is certainly a more apt description than Transform Oxford.
