Me And The Cannon, 2019

Me And The Cannon, 2019
This is me standing next to a howitzer that used to sit beside Benton Lake. They have moved it into town near the square now.

At least you are not looking into the barrel. It is not a particularly attractive setting for the cannon, but at last more people can see it in town.

As to the setting, I agree with you. But I found out just that day that about 20 to 30 feet just in front of the cannon and behind that tall chainlink fence is an historic gallows where a notorious gangster had been hanged in 1928. Plus there was an old Buick from the 1920s that could have also belonged to said gangster, namely Charlie Birger. Charlie Birger was the next to last person hanged in Illinois. The last one was hanged later that same year and then hanging was no longer used as punishment here in Illinois.

Edit to add:
Hanging seemed really effective. I wonder why they did away with it?
