tied up on the phone at WELP Radio, circa 2001. I'm left handed, and believe it or not, I was actually talking on the phone that's up to my left ear at the time that this shot was taken. (The other two phones were a co-worker's idea, as we were staging a picture for newsprint.)
Notice the turntables, old television sets, cassette players, and reel-to-reel recorders in the background. (and hardly a gray hair on my head!) My, how much things have changed since then!
"Old Fashioned Days" at Kings Grove Baptist Church, Central, SC. (yes, I know they didn't have paved roads back then, but this is as authentic as we could make it.) We parked our cars several miles back and walked to church as they did in old times, and a few people even arrived on horseback, or by horse and buggy.
This almost backfired. As I recall, the way this worked is that they came to your workplace, gave you a citation for being a nice person, and then requested that you accompany them to the "detention center" where you're supposed to raise money for your "release" by calling all your friends and asking them to make a donation to MDA. My friends conspired to keep me in, and no one would come forward to "bail" me out. (They said they were happy to see their boss behind bars!) Eventually, someone reversed the game and jokingly offered to pay them just to keep me there. (Of course, its all voluntary participation, and its for charity- the MDA, so I could have left at any time.) All in all, it was a lot of fun, and we raised quite a bit of money, although the exact figure escapes me. (circa 1998, 1999)
My father with my daughter Kristin. One of only a few pictures I have of him with her, and one of only a few I have of Kristin with a pacifier. I took the advise of my parents and got Kristin off the pacifier at an early age. I've actually seen kids starting to school whose parents still haven't managed to break their child's addiction to the pacifier. (I'm sure taking Kristin's pacifier at such an early age spared me many long days and nights of grief later on down the road.)
I owned a Buick for several years. On a Sunday afternoon in late 2005, just after returning home from church, I noticed that my cat was at the front door acting crazy. Thinking I must have a dog in my yard, I went to the door to investigate, only to see flames bursting out from under my hood. Many gallons of water later, the car was declared "totalled" by the insurer, and I was shopping for another car.
