I'm thinking that $86,000 was a lot of money in 1851... in fact, if someone gave me $86k today, even with the loss of value compared to the value of that amount in 1851, I certainly wouldn't refuse the money!. (I wonder how long it took the taxpayers to retire this debt? Maybe our current leadership took their "tax and spend" examples from these guys.) lol :)
