Patriot

Patriot
Saturday challenge - Patriotism

I was born in England, but have lived more years in Australia. Still miss the old country, but very much an Aussie now.

Other people have posted sad stories of the past, for this week's topic. We have all been affected by the wars. My Grandfather served in WWI, and was sent to Mesopotamia, not knowing what was happening in other parts, marched incessantly in the British Army there, and was lucky to survive. One of his brothers was killed in action at Loos in Belgium, age 19. My Grandmother's young brother was killed in 1916 on HMS Invincible at the Battle of Jutland, age 17. My Father served in the British Army in WWII, was sent to North Africa late 1942, in the campaign against Rommel. Then his unit moved to Italy, where they lost many, at the Battle of Monte Cassino, in 1944. Dad was lucky to survive. My Mother's brother was killed on the front line in France in 1944, at the Falaise Gap in Normandy, age 20. All were doing their duty for their country.

Aw, he's so cute and very patriotic looking.

I was also born in England but have been in the states all my life so I know what you mean. Wars always leave us with sad stories such as yours here. You lost a lot of family members. My mother lost her fiance' in WWII and my dad fought in WWII and Korea. So many wars...

Wir können wohl alle ein bisschen stolz darauf sein, dass wir trotz dieser grausamen Vorgeschichte inzwischen 75 Jahre lang Frieden in Europa haben - beinahe.
Ein friedlicher Teddy, gutes Symbol!

We all have differing opinions. For me, globalisation seems to be responsible for the spread of a super virus, for excessive use of fossil fuels, a decline in local manufacturing, too much reliance on products from exploiting lower incomes in other countries. Patriotism can be a good thing, inspiring people to work hard for their own country, and have more local produce. Self sufficiency is a good thing. Trying to solve the world's problems is a very difficult task. When we have a pandemic, closing borders makes a lot of sense.

"Patriotism"... devotion to and vigorous support for one's country (with an emphasis on good values)
Greek and especially Roman antiquity provide the roots for a political patriotism that conceives of loyalty to the patria as loyalty to a political conception of the republic. It is associated with the love of law and common liberty, the search for the common good, and the duty to behave justly toward one’s country... www.britannica.com/topic/patriotism-sociology

WHO Director-General's opening remarks at the media briefing on COVID-19 - 4 May 2020

"As my friend Boris Johnson said during today’s pledging event, we’re in this together, and together we will prevail.

We will prevail through national unity and global solidarity.

The antidote to this virus is national unity and global solidarity.

The antidote to this virus is the human spirit."

GENEVA, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- The chief of the World Health Organization (WHO) on Thursday urged world leaders to "choose the path of cooperation and act now" to end the COVID-19 pandemic.
"We must seize this moment to come together in national unity and global solidarity to control COVID-19, address antimicrobial resistance and the climate crisis," he urged, adding that for all the differences, "we are one human race sharing the same planet and our security is interdependent."
