We saw them growing and blooming in Queensland when we were there two years ago. Saw them in the area of Cathedral Fig. Here they're just a houseplant.

They are actually regarded as invasive plants. Not to be planted near teh house or pipes, etc.

Those leaves will work to shelter from the rain and create shade. It allows a good amount of light through its leaves giving off a satisfying green.
